The Official Opening of our new King’s Sports Centre

Tuesday 9 July saw the official opening of our new £4.5m Sports Centre. We were delighted to welcome our prestigious guest, Rebecca Romero MBE, who is an Olympic Games silver medallist at rowing, and a former World champion and former Olympic champion track cyclist.

Our Headmaster, George Hartley, who is a great advocate of sport, highlighted how the Sports Centre will increase provision for all students to get involved in some sort of physical activity not only for health benefits but also life skills such as resilience, leadership and teamwork.

Our Director of Sport, Richard Lunn, spoke about how we as a school strongly believe there is a synergy between being active and achieving success and the new facilities will widen our provision to truly offer ‘sport for all’.

Rebecca’s speech touched on how she always felt she was just a ‘normal’ person who saw athletes as superhuman. It wasn’t until she was 17 and moved to Kingston where a fellow sportsperson encouraged her to train, a moment she said ‘changed her life’, and ever since she has been grateful that she has found, not one, but two sports that have ignited her passion for sport. Rebecca emphasised the benefits that sport can bring, developing skills which enhance your physical and emotional state in order to become a well-rounded individual.

Our VIP guests, including King’s governors, the High Sheriff of Cheshire and local business owners, had a tour of the new facilities, including The Terrace Café, ergo room, gym, and dance studio. They were also invited to the Sports Centre reception where Rebecca Romero unveiled the official plaque.
