Outstanding success at Chester chess competition - The King's School Chester

Outstanding success at Chester chess competition

On Friday, 13 February, the 2026 Chester Schools Together Chess Tournament took place at the Bishops’ Bluecoat Church of England High School.

Five King’s School pupils travelled the short distance across Chester to take on players from Bishops, Upton High School, Catholic High School and Queen’s Park High School in the annual competition.

All five members of the King’s team played exceptionally well and were thrilled to return to school with two trophies.

Congratulations to Elliot Berg (3WER) who won the tournament, and to Leo Thompson (RMAN) who was awarded “Most Outstanding Player” after a nail-biting finish against another King’s player.

Mr Dewbery runs the weekly Senior School Chess Club and accompanied the team to the tournament. He said: “Our players all demonstrated excellent focus, determination and sportsmanship throughout and everyone rose to the challenge, producing some impressive games against strong opposition.”

Chess Club meets on Wednesday lunchtimes in the Old Library and is open to all year groups. Pupils can sign up on SOCS.
