Summer Reading Challenge – Patron of Reading announces winners

It was a joy this week to welcome Sarah Crossan (virtually) for her first assembly as our new Patron of Reading.

She talked to Removes about how she became an author and what she wants to achieve as Patron of Reading but, most importantly, she announced the winners of the Summer Reading Challenge.

During the summer before they joined Removes, pupils were challenged to read at least four books on the theme of “Other Lands” and, to be in with a chance of winning a prize, they were asked to respond to one or more of the books they read in the most creative way.

To say that Sarah was impressed with the creativity of the pupils would be an understatement but before she announced the winners, she awarded a special prize to Sadhbh Young (RmRL) for reading the most books. Sadhbh read an impressive 48 books – well done!

The creative winners all received a box of chocolates and a £10 voucher for the Storyhouse. Congratulations to:

  • Eva Moss (RmRL) who wrote about the books she read and created some beautiful paintings linked to them
  • Reuben Connor (RmRE) who created a fantastic stop-motion animation about Tom Palmer’s “D-Day Dog”
  • Genevieve Smith (RmRW) who wrote a beautiful review of Marcus Zusak’s “The Book Thief” and presented it to look like a book, complete with artwork
  • Siddhant Gargh (RmDR) who created an attractive and interesting factfile on Ronaldo after reading his autobiography

Sarah concluded the assembly with a Q&A session before announcing that the pupils would all receive a signed copy of her book “The Weight of Water” to take away with them. Librarian Mrs Harding thanked the KSPA for funding the purchase of the books.

She said: “We are really grateful to the KSPA for purchasing these books. Removes will be using them in tutor time activities over the coming months, and I know that Sarah is looking forward to hearing what pupils though of the book when she joins us next time. Hopefully that will be in real life rather than via Zoom!”
