Three entrepreneurial students are celebrating after their innovative business ideas were shortlisted for a local business award.
The winners of the Chester Business Club 2025 Young Person Business Awards will be revealed at the club’s annual dinner in July and King’s students are responsible for two of the five shortlisted business ideas.
Sixth Form student Matthew McGoldrick (L6GLA) has been shortlisted in the Vision Awards category for his idea for an app and toy combination that is designed to help parents replace their children’ mindless content with an engaging game whilst also managing screen time.
Matthew explained: “My idea is Metroblox. It’s a city-building game in which, instead of in-app purchases, parents can buy magnetic block kits that allow children to construct in real life and import their creations into the online game. One of the key features of the app is that the city the children build goes to sleep at the child’s bedtime.”
Matthew has been working on his idea for his A level DT project and is pleased that it has captured the imagination of the judges.
Also in the Vision Award category, Shells pupils Freddie Leslie (SHWAL) and Alex Edge (SHWAL) are the youngest finalists, having been shortlisted for their idea for an e-commerce business. Their aim is to build a website to sell items that are on-trend but in non-saturated markets, starting with a car seat phone holder.
Business and Economics teacher Clare Rule encouraged the current pupils to enter the awards and is pleased that their efforts have been recognised in this way. She said: “I was really pleased that so many of our pupils entered their business ideas for the award and I am delighted that Freddie, Alex and Matthew have been shortlisted.
“They have all showed great initiative and considered their applications very carefully. Their ideas show real entrepreneurial spirit and, whatever the outcome on the awards evening, they should be very proud of themselves.”
