Gallery: Removes raise the roof at end of term concert

On Wednesday, 6 December, twelve weeks of hard work came to a roof-raising conclusion as all Removes pupils took to the stage in their end of term concert.

Thanks to generous funding from our Alumni association, the Chester Association of Old King’s Scholars (CAOKS), every pupil in Removes (Year 7) has enjoyed a term of free lessons on an orchestral instrument.

Director of Music, Debbie Whitfield, was incredibly proud of every pupil.

She said: “The aim of the Let’s Get Playing scheme was to expose all pupils to the joy and wonder of playing an musical instrument and it has been a pleasure to watch this group of pupils really embrace the opportunity.

“The concert was a wonderful celebration of everything they have learned this term; their teachers and I were impressed with the enthusiasm with which they played, and the quality of music they produced.”

The concert included ensemble performances, as well as solo and small group pieces, all of which were enjoyed by the appreciative audience.

As part of the scheme, all pupils have taken their grade one music theory exam, and many have taken the opportunity to complete their ABRSM Copper Music Medal.

Seven pupils, all strings players, have already successfully completed their Music Medal. Congratulations to:

  • Matthew Callahan (RMJG) – cello
  • Viona Goswami (RMSC) – cello
  • Otto Malasomma (RMMD) – bass
  • Emily Singleton (RMJG) – bass
  • Matthew Vaughan (RMSC) – violin
  • Romilly Walsh (RMMB) – viola
  • Gadowl Oyedeji (RMMD) – viola

All Removes pupils now have the opportunity to continue with their lessons at 50% of the normal price. Funded by the King’s School Parents’ Association (KSPA), this means that, for the remainder of the school year, their musical instrument tuition will cost just £9 per lesson.

Mrs Whitfield hopes that many pupils will continue with their lessons: “I have seen a spark in this year group and I can’t wait to welcome them into one of our many musical ensembles in the future.”
