The King’s School Chester Rowing Club’s boys’ first VIII took their place in the club’s history as they joined an exclusive group of King’s rowers to have raced at Henley Royal Regatta, and became the first recipients of the newly established King’s Henley Badge.
After successfully qualifying for the regatta, the crew faced a tough draw against reigning Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup champions Shiplake College in the opening round. The boys faced the challenge with characteristic determination and, although the result did not go their way, they produced a courageous and committed performance against one of the strongest school crews in the country.
The crew of Misho Dragnev (cox), Oliver Wells, Adam Gloyne-Phillips, Harry Paul (Captain of Boats), Charlie Wastling, Daniel Burman, Ben Cooper, Oliver Caldwell and Will Gavin has shown remarkable dedication, resilience and professionalism throughout the year, which culminated in competing at the world’s most famous regatta.
Director of Rowing Nick Wells praised the crew’s achievements and the example they have set for younger rowers at the club: “Qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta is an outstanding achievement in itself.
“This crew has prepared relentlessly since September, completing more than 400,000 training strokes and demonstrating exceptional commitment through every stage of the season. The boys should be incredibly proud of what they have accomplished; they have proven that King’s crews belong on this stage.”
Mr Wells also paid tribute to the wider community that has supported the club, and this crew: “Success in rowing is never achieved by the athletes alone. Our coaches, parents and families have all played an enormous role in supporting this crew, and I am incredibly grateful for everything they have contributed.
“This group has continued a proud King’s rowing tradition, and their journey will inspire many more crews in the years ahead.”
The boys’ first VIII leaves Henley having created memories that will last a lifetime while adding another proud chapter to the rich history of rowing at The King’s School Chester. As Henley marked the final King’s race for five Upper Sixth rowers – Harry Paul, Oliver Wells, Ben Cooper, Misho Dragnev and Charlie Wastling – we wish them all the best for a very bright future.
