Rowing: Junior Inter-Regional Regatta 2023

On Saturday, 22 April, the twelve British rowing regions competed against each other at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham in the 2023 Junior Inter-Regional Regatta (JIRR).

The King’s School Rowing Club (KSRC) qualified five boats to represent the North West in Nottingham where racing conditions were good over the 1,500m course.

Rowing Coach James Gray accompanied the athletes to Nottingham. He said: “For many of our crews, this was only their first or second experience of multi-lane regatta racing and it was great to see them step up and put into practice what they learned at the Easter training camp in South Wales.”

Both the J15 and J16 boys coxed four showed great determination to finish second in their heats and make it through to the A final. Achieving 4th place overall, the missed out on medals but the crews remained positive about the experience and they are looking forward to more multi-lane racing during the summer term.

The J15 girls four and J16 girls VIII also made it through the heats and into the A finals. Up against strong opposition, both crews came third, each taking home the bronze medal.

Also racing was Owen Davies (L6GLA), who won silver in the single scull at last year’s JIRR. This year, he went one better and produced one of the outstanding performances of the day to win Gold in his single scull.

In total, ten clubs represented the North West in the competition, collaborating to achieve third place in the overall rankings.

James Gray again: “I am very proud of all our athletes; they gained valuable experience and confidence, giving a tremendous effort to hep the North West to achieve a fantastic overall result.”
