Congratulations to Eleanor Williams (U6DUT) and Lucie Thornton (L6LES) who were crowned national champions in the Junior Women’s J18 Pair at the British Rowing Championships, held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham earlier this month.
Competing against the strongest crews from across Great Britain, Eleanor and Lucie produced a series of outstanding performances to secure the national title.
A win in the opening time trial by the narrowest of margins – just 0.1 seconds ahead of their closest competition – saw the girls make a strong start to their campaign. Another close race in the semi-final ended in victory for the girls, securing them a place in the A Final.
They made a superb start in the Final, taking control of the race from the beginning and establishing a convincing 3.5 second lead by the halfway point. They continued strong and, despite a final push from the opposition, held their composure to cross the finish line as British champions.
Outgoing Director of Rowing, Nick Wells, congratulated the girls on the historic victory.
He said: “This is a proud day for the King’s School Chester Rowing Club, and this win is testament to the dedication, resilience and teamwork shown by both girls throughout the season.
“The pair have demonstrated exceptional commitment, training daily whilst balancing the demands of GCSE and A Level studies over the last two years. Their national title is a richly deserved reward for months of hard work and perseverance.
“Huge thanks have to go to their coach, Matt Jump, whose expert guidance and support have helped the pair reach the pinnacle of junior rowing.”
The championship was a memorable way for Eleanor to end her time at the rowing club as she prepares to start university later this year. We wish her all the best with her studies and know that she will continue her success on the water.
