ROWING: Record-breaking girls take top honours

March has been a record breaking month for the Girls senior rowing squad.

The Girls 1^st & 2^nd VIIIs helped King’s secure the Victor Ludorum at the Runcorn Head at the start of the month, with the 1^st VIII winning the overall event and Headship by 40 seconds and the 2^nd VIII winning the 2^nd tier event.

Following the success in the North West, both crews raced at the Nationals and the Schools’ Head in London where the 1^st VIII finished sixth, the 2^nd VIII in third place.

The final race of the term was the North of England Head on the River Dee, where the Girls 1^st VIII set a new record, winning the Headship as the quickest Women’s crew of the day.

Individually, there have been further successes as Club Captain Lily Wood set a new club record for a 2000 metre ergo test. With a fantastic time of 7 minutes, 19.3 seconds, she broke the previous record which had stood for five years. 

David Blackham, Director of Rowing, is very proud of the girls’ performance.

He said: “The girls have had a brilliant month; they have set records, won two Headships and really raised the bar for girls’ rowing at King’s. Working with their coaches, Matt Jump and Val Edwards, both the 1^st VIII and 2^nd VIII have recorded some brilliant performances.

“Lily’s achievement on the rowing machine was the icing on the cake and a fine achievement, it will be a tough record to break!”
