An international perspective at MUN

On Saturday, 24 January, fourteen Lower Sixth pupils from The King’s School attended Stonyhurst MUN in Lancashire, including a number of first-time delegates who were keen to put their debating and negotiation skills to the test against schools from around the country.

Representing Burundi, Panama and South Korea on a number of different committees, issues for debate and discussion included the regulation of AI in warfare and nuclear command, tariffs and trade protectionism in the modern global economy, and the rights of refugees and migrants.

Three King’s delegates were commended for their excellent contributions during the conference, receiving prizes from the Secretary General at the closing ceremony.

In addition, one of the first-time delegates, Jack Secrette (L6GRO) was successful in having his resolution passed by the Economic and Financial Committee.

Corrissa Collier is the MUN coordinator at King’s and was thrilled that the King’s delegations enjoyed such a successful conference at Stonyhurst MUN.

She said: “Model United Nations gives students a unique opportunity to research and view a global issue from a different perspective. As such, it’s a great way for students to develop important skills of empathy, negotiation and compromise, as well as public speaking and debate.

“MUN continues to grow in popularity at King’s and it was great to have so many first-time delegates from the Lower Sixth. I was really impressed with how they prepared for the conference, and for their impressive contributions on the day.

Attention now turns to our own KingsMUN on 28 February which will see King’s students will step up to organise every element of the conference as we look forward to welcoming a number of schools to KingsMUN for a day of lively debate.
