Joy at National Reading Champions Quiz Finals

On Wednesday, 21 May, Removes pupils Edmund, Ben, Connie, Matthew and Andrea travelled to London to take on 24 schools from around the country in the grand final of this year’s National Reading Champions Quiz.

This was the third consecutive year that a King’s team has made the national final and, accompanied by librarians Miss Brooks and Mrs Melville, the team of book lovers was in fine spirits as they arrived at the Victory Services Club for the quiz.

Our intrepid readers faced eight tricky book-themed rounds of questions, presented as ever by the entertaining Mr Dilly.

When the scores were added up and the winners announced, the team was pleased to find that they had finished in a very respectable fourteenth place.

Head Librarian, Miss Brooks, was very proud of the team: “This year’s final seemed much harder than previous years and I am incredibly proud of how they worked together to answer the questions and kept going even when they found it tough.

“They have enjoyed a brilliant, book-filled day, especially as they had the chance to spend their book tokens in the big Waterstones.

“I have no doubt that we will be seeing more of this team next year and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for another trip down to London in 2026.”

The annual event is organised by the National Literacy Trust and aims to celebrate reading culture within schools and encourage reading for pleasure, reading diversity and the development of reading stamina.
