Schola Cantorum lead first Community Carol Service

On Friday, 2 December, The King’s School hosted its first Community Carol Concert at St Mary Without-the-Walls in Handbridge.

Director of Music, Debbie Whitfield, played an instrumental role in organising the event. She said: “It was wonderful to see so many people in St Mary’s to enjoy a festive evening of music, drama and readings.”

Schola Cantorum led the carols and delighted the congregation with beautiful renditions of Carol of the Bells and A Christmas Blessing

Maisie O’Leary (U6DUT) gave a solo performance of O Gloriosa Domina by Michael Head, and the congregation were in fine voice as they sang along with such classic carols as O Come All Ye Faithful and Hark the Herald

Alongside the music, the congregation enjoyed readings by King’s students, pop-up poems and short drama pieces that made full use of the beautiful space.

Claire Lanceley, Head of Maths and coordinator of the staff and parent prayer group, helped to organise the event and she was delighted with the turn out from the local community.

She said: “A good night was had by all and we were delighted to welcome around 200 people to the church to celebrate with us.

We are so incredibly proud of the students that took part, and Schola Cantorum sounded incredible. We hope that the success of this year’s concert has begun a new King’s tradition.”
