Sixth Form Geographers explore the power of place with Tim Marshall

On Thursday, 12 February, twelve Sixth Form Geographers enjoyed a trip to Wrekin College where they heard a fascinating lecture by Tim Marshall.

Drawing from his international bestseller Prisoners of Geography, Tim delivered a compelling lecture, exploring how physical features such as mountains, rivers, and coastlines continue to shape the destiny of nations. His central argument was that, despite the rapid advances in modern technology, the “iron bars” of physical geography remain as influential as ever in international relations and global conflict.

The trip was made even more special by the opportunity for students to reconnect with a familiar face. The group enjoyed catching up with former King’s Head of Rowing, Grosvenor House and much loved Geography teacher, Mr David Blackham, who left King’s to join Wrekin College as Senior Deputy Head last year.

Head of Geography, Mr Prestshaw, accompanied the trip. He said: “This was a memorable evening that brought the A level Geography specification to life for our young geographers, providing our students with a fresh perspective on the silent architects of history and diplomacy.

“Opportunities to extend their understanding and think beyond the curriculum are essential elements of A level study and really help to prepare our students for university learning.”
