Taking a closer look: science lesson in Infant 2

Infant 2 children enjoyed a science lesson with a difference when they welcomed two Senior School Biology teachers to Willow Lodge.

As part of this term’s topic, Great and Small, the children have been learning all about plants. On Wednesday, 13 May, they had the exciting opportunity to look closely at different parts of a plant and discover the incredible detail that is revealed through a microscope.

Mrs Rutter and Mrs Wilkinson, two of our Senior School Biology teachers, led the session and they were very impressed with the children’ knowledge of plants and pollination before the lesson had even begun.

Working carefully together, the children took apart a tulip and used their understanding to identify the various parts of the flower.

When they moved on to the highlight of the session – examining pollen and petals under the microscope – the classroom was soon filled with enthusiastic exclamations of “Wow!”, “Amazing!” and “I can see so much detail!”

Mrs Rutter praised the children for their amazing listening skills and enthusiasm. She said: “Mrs Wilkinson and I have been blown away by the Infant 2 children today. They listened brilliantly, used the microscopes with great care, and demonstrated impressive knowledge about plants. I hope that we will be invited back soon.”

Infant 2 teacher Mr Blakemore added: “It is wonderful for our children to have the opportunity to use the same equipment as the Senior School pupils. We are incredibly fortunate to have expert teachers such as Mrs Rutter and Mrs Wilkinson, and today’s amazing lesson really highlights the advantages of having our infant school on the same site as the Senior School.

“This was a lesson that our children won’t forget in a hurry, and I suspect that there may be lots of microscopes appearing on birthday and Christmas lists this year!”

Today’s lesson in Infant 2 is a great example of the inspiring learning opportunities that are made possible by having our infants, juniors, senior school and sixth form pupils on the same site, ensuring that our youngest pupils benefit from specialist knowledge, facilities and experience of the wider school community.
