West Side Story – one week until curtain up

There is just over one week to go before the curtain goes up on this year’s hotly anticipated Senior School production of West Side Story.

Based on the timeless musical classic that reimagines Romeo and Juliet in 1950s New York, this iconic story of love, rivalry and betrayal will come to life on the Vanbrugh Theatre stage from 4–7 February 2026.

Directed by drama teacher Julia Williams, the show captures the intensity, energy and emotion that have made West Side Story one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

For more than six months, rehearsals have put the talented cast of more than 50 pupils through their paces, many of whom admit that they didn’t know much about the story at first.

However, it is clear that they have grown to love the show, perhaps even surprising themselves at how much they have embraced the iconic dancing and high-energy choreography.

One cast member noted: “The dancing, fight scenes and catchy songs have brought a whole new element to the experience of being in a school production. I feel that West Side Story has been more physically demanding than previous shows but we have all loved it, and I know that will shine through on stage.”

When asked to describe the show, the young cast said: “West Side Story can be described as tragic, emotional and intense but audiences need to know that it is also funny and highly energetic.

“If I had to summarise it, I would say that there are moments of unexpected comedy mixed into a powerful, tear-jerking story. It will take the audience on a real rollercoaster ride of emotions.”
