Prestigious award recognises school’s green credentials

Willow Lodge pupils and staff are celebrating their impressive achievement of the Platinum Award, the highest level of the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Award.

The prestigious award now hangs proudly in Willow Lodge in recognition of the number and variety of green projects that infant pupils have taken part in over the last 12 months.

Deputy Head of Willow Lodge, Mrs Callaghan, is the school’s Woodland Trust coordinator.

She said: “The children fully deserve this award as they have been very busy this year, planting trees, growing our vegetable plot, and creating welcoming environments for birds, bugs, butterflies and other creatures in our school grounds.

“The children have constructed fantastic hedgehog houses out of natural materials, installed butterfly-friendly feeding stations and made eco-friendly bus houses.”

Pupils have also led on a number of initiatives in school, such as poster campaigns to encourage staff to turn off lights, and a recycling station for paper and card.

Mrs Callaghan continued: “Through the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Award, the children are given invaluable opportunities to learn about the outdoors and to make a real difference in their local environment.

Willow Lodge pupils really do embrace every opportunity and we are incredibly proud of how environmentally aware they are as a result.”
