Students take on the National Reading Quiz Final

On Tuesday, 6 June, more than three months after being declared North West Regional Champions, Yinnes, Alex, Fleur and Eva took on 21 schools from around the UK in the National Reading Champions Quiz Final.

Accompanied by Head Librarian, Miss Brooks, the team were in good spirits despite an early start from Chester station. Arriving in London mid-morning, the team was immediately impressed by the grandeur of the venue for the quiz, Goldsmiths Hall.

The teams faced ten themed rounds of tricky book-based questions, all presented by the regular and familiar host, Mr Dilly.

As the scores were added up behind the scenes, the finalists were treated to a fantastic Q&A with Anthony McGowan, Jennifer Killick, Jasbinder Bilan and Benjamin Dean, even having the opportunity to put their own questions to the well-known authors.

It was nail-bitingly tense as the results were revealed with King’s finishing in joint sixth place.

With just a few points separating them from the winners, Mrs Brooks was very proud of the team.

She said: “There were some really tough questions but the girls weren’t phased at all.

“They enjoyed a brilliant, book-filled day and are looking forward to showing off their regional trophy in the school library when they return.”

As well as the trophy, the students received four books donated by publishers and won a spot prize of a book each.

Ending the day on a high, they made their way to Waterstones to spend the book tokens they had won as regional champions. Well done team!

The annual event is organised by the National Literacy Trust and aims to celebrate reading culture within schools and encourage reading for pleasure, reading diversity and the development of reading stamina.
