Welcome to King's
Introduction
The King's School Senior School educates girls and boys from 11 to 16 years of age with the majority continuing into the Sixth Form. The School is based approximately one mile from Chester and is on a site of some 32 acres.
Founded by Henry VIII, The King's school is proud of its historical tradition, but its vision for the future is forward-looking and the School's vision is to inspire young people to embark on life confident of their place in the world and able to become leaders in it. We aim to be one of the country's leading co-educational day schools, providing a transformative experience for all pupils within the King's family. The School harnesses and enriches the academic, creative, spiritual and physical potential of both staff and pupils. We aim to shape their way of thinking and experiencing the world and, through them and our work in local society, influence the world. In brief, a King's education aims at the pursuit of unpretentious excellence.
"In pursuit of unpretentious excellence"
We believe that King's is an exceptional school. We admire tolerance, respect, integrity and strength of character. Girls & Boysalike develop a genuine zest for learning, independence and mutual respect.
The children start at 11 years in the 'Removes' year (Year 7) in small tutor groups of 11-13. From the minute they enter King's, children easily transfer into secondary education with the great pastoral and mentoring support. Pupils have a wide curriculum which is enhanced by an enormous array of extra-curricular activities from Chess Club to Film Club.
By the time they leave us, King's pupils are self assured, articulate, well-rounded men and women, prepared academically and socially for university and beyond and are valued by the top universities.
The academic record of King's speaks for itself - we have a broad and stimulating curriculum. In the classroom the emphasis is on discussion, debate, research and critical thinking. Pupils are encouraged to challenge and question accepted notions by teachers whose passion and knowledge of their subject inspire and stretch young minds.
In addition to the academic curriculum, there is a fantastic range of other opportunities, including :
- Rowing - the Rowing Club and Boathouse
- Sport - over 25 different sports on offer
- Drama - at least six productions per year
- Music - 26 different music groups
- Chess - regular chess club meetings
Facilities
Set within 32 acres of sports fields with 12 playing fields, a floodlit astroturf, 8 Tennis Courts, Swimming Pool and a Music School. The King's school boasts excellent facilities. The classrooms are light and spacious in the purpose built school built after the move to the current site from the Cathedral over 50 years ago. Every year new facilities are introduced. Curriculum
The tutor groups in the Year 7 (Removes) year start at 11/13 pupils, ensuring that all pupils get to know their form tutor very well. Each year group is managed by a Head of Year teacher who reports into the Deputy Head - Pastoral. This system ensures that pastoral care at King's is strong and effective.
Clubs and Activities
Clubs and Activities are one of King's real strengths. There are over 150 clubs and activities on offer including 26 music groups, many academically stimulating clubs such as Passion 4 Poetry, and we are a leading Chess School. Add to this the fantastic drama in the new £1.2m Vanbrugh Theatre and the highly successful sports clubs on offer from hockey to gymnastics and there really is something for everyone. We compete at regional and district level in many sports and have had particular success in Hockey, Footbal, Cricket and Rowing. King's is constantly one of the top rowing schools in the country.
