Welcome to the King's Junior School.

The King's Junior School

Introduction

You couldn't wish for a better introduction to King's for your child. Here, in small classes under the caring eye of their teacher, they will be encouraged to explore and discover the world around them through imagination, creativity and fun. Our role is to help your children fulfil their potential and realise their talents in a friendly, open and respectful environment. They will leave the Junior school with all the skills and confidence to move seamlessly into Senior education and beyond. Alongside the traditional curriculum, we believe strongly that Drama, Music and Sport build skills of teamwork, character, fairplay and give all pupils an opportunity to perform and shine.

The King's School Junior School is situated on the main school campus in a separate self-contained school. King's specialises in junior education with pupils joining the school from the age of seven through to eleven years old.

Facilities

The Junior School boasts its own excellent facilities-Library, Sports Hall, 4 Sports Fields, Cricket Pavilion, Music, I.T., Design Technology and Art classrooms. The School was purpose-built and has sunny, bright classrooms. The Junior School is able to access some of the Senior School facilities such as the Swimming Pool, Athletics tracks, Astro-turf, Tennis/Netball Courts, Music School for individual musical instrument tuition, and the new Vanbrugh Theatre for Drama and Music performances.

Curriculum

There are either two or three classes per year. Class sizes start at 15-20 at J1 (aged seven), rising to a maximum of 24 by J4 (aged 11). The vast majority of our juniors move up to the Senior School and from September 2011, we are trialing a new entrance procedure which means that our J4s no longer have to take the Senior School entrance examination as offers of senior school places will be based on the continuous assessment of their Junior School years.

The teacher/pupil ratio in the Junior School is 1:13. All pupils learn Spanish from 7 years of age, with the addition of French and German at age 10. Mandarin Chinese is offered as an after-school club.

You will not find King's on any junior school league tables. In common with the majority of the top HMC and Independent schools, we do not do the Government's SAT papers on which these league tables are based. King's sees no role for SATs as the vast majority of our children go on to the Senior School. King's follows an alternative externally-moderated testing system which better assesses our bright children for their future education. The league tables at junior level, therefore, are extremely misleading as they ignore many of the top schools.

Extra-curricular activities

There are over 25 lunchtime and after-school activities on offer, including 5 music groups such as Orchestra and Choir. The Junior School has a fine reputation for excellence in drama and music, with at least 2 major drama productions and 2 concerts annually. The Junior School regularly win cups at the Chester Festival of Performing Arts and have an annual Art and DT exhibition.

Sports is a key part of our curriculum and in recent years the Juniors have won Regional cups in Football, Tennis, Hockey, Swimming and Triathlon. Many of our pupils hold county honours in sports such as Hockey, Chess, Football, Cricket, Cross Country, Badminton, Table Tennis and we have National representation in Show Jumping and Cricket.
